Rev. James W. Martin, age 90, of Murfreesboro died Wednesday, May 22nd at the Tennessee State Veterans Home. Visitation will be Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 11:00 am until the time of services beginning 1:00pm at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Services will be conducted with the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge, No. 18, F&AM. and members of the United States Army will be providing full military honors.
Mr. Martin was a native Virginian but has resided in Tennessee for 49 years. He was the son of the late Rev. Clay S. Martin and Grace Emma (Hill) Martin. He was preceded in death by brothers Elmer C. Martin, Clayton Martin, and sister Edith Sawyers. He has survived by his wife Peggy Carr Martin; a son James Philip Martin and his wife Jeanmarie and one grandson Jameson A. Martin all of Murfreesboro; a granddaughter Elizabeth Hurst and her husband Chase of Fort Drum, NY; one brother Clarence Martin and a sister Billie Jean Ridpath both of Virginia.
He was an Ordained Minister of the Murfreesboro Presbytery, Cumberland Presbytery Church. He served Blues Hill Cumberland Presbytery Church for 10 years and Dibrell Cumberland Presbytery Church for 8 years.
His educational background began in the elementary and secondary school system in Virginia. He graduated from Fielddale High School, Fielddale, Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Theology from Holmes Bible College; Greensville, South Carolina, 1948. A Bachelor of Arts from Lynchburg College; Lynchburg VA. 1952. A Master of Divinity from the Lexington Theological Seminary; 1957. A CSW and Master’s Degree from Louisiana State University; 1960.
Mr. Martin was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, holding numerous leadership positions on the Troop, District, and Council levels. He was active in the Order of the Arrow and Vigil Honor. He was a past Scoutmaster of Troop 448, Trinity United Methodist Church, Murfreesboro for several years.
He was a member of the Masonic Order; was Past Master of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 18, F&AM. and a Past Master of the York Rite Bodies. He was a 32 degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Bodies, and member of the Al Menah Shrine Temple. He was awarded the Knight York Cross Honor from the York Rite Bodies of free masonry after serving as Worshipful Master, of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 18 F&AM.
He served in the United States Army from September 25th, 1943 to April 16th, 1946 and received Honorable Discharge. He was active duty in the U.S., France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He was a retiree from the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center, after serving as a Clinical Master Social Worker for 25 years.
