Masons erection halted

August 3rd, 2010

PLANS for the Freemasons to build a statue in Alice Springs have been delayed by heritage concerns.

The $25,000 statue of John McDouall Stuart is being gifted by the McDouall Stuart Freemason lodge to Alice Springs Town Council to mark the 150th anniversary since the explorer reached Central Australia.

But last week the Public Art Advisory Committee wrote an open letter to the council complaining they had not been consulted in the decision to accept the gift of the statue.

Mayor Damien Ryan and Grand Master of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of South Australia and the Northern Territory, the Most Worshipful Brother Ray Clark, issued a statement saying the erection would be "halted" while the heritage requirements were worked through.

The gifting ceremony is now scheduled to occur at 4.30pm on Friday.
