A survey of more than 150,000 police and civilian staff in England and Wales has shown 610 declaring they are freemasons, the Government said tonight.

But 101,042 did not respond or responded by declining to say whether or not they were freemasons, said Home Office Minister of State Mr. Charles Clarke in a Commons written reply.

He said 49,431 declared they were not freemasons.

Replying to Labour MP David Winnick (Walsall North) he said 151,091 forms were sent to civilians and police in 32 police forces.
