JournoList: Inside the echo chamber
MICHAEL CALDERONE | 3/17/09 3:59 AM EDT
For the past two years, several hundred left-leaning bloggers, political reporters, magazine writers, policy wonks and academics have talked stories and compared notes in an off-the-record online meeting space called JournoList. Proof of a vast liberal media conspiracy?
Not at all, says Ezra Klein, the 24-year-old American Prospect blogging wunderkind who formed JournoList in February 2007. “Basically,” he says, “it’s just a list where journalists and policy wonks can discuss issues freely.” But some of the journalists who participate in the online discussion say — off the record, of course — that it has been a great help in their work.
On the record, The New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin acknowledged that a Talk of the Town piece — he won’t say which one — got its start in part via a conversation on JournoList. And JLister Eric Alterman, The Nation writer and CUNY professor, said he’s seen discussions that start on the list seep into the world beyond. “I’m very lazy about writing when I’m not getting paid,” Alterman said. “So if I take the trouble to write something in any detail on the list, I tend to cannibalize it.
It doesn’t surprise me when I see things on the list on people’s blogs.” Last April, criticism of ABC’s handling of a Democratic presidential debate took shape on JList before morphing into an open letter to the network, signed by more than 40 journalists and academics — many of whom are JList members.

San Diego Flight Training
Training to become a commercial pilot can be a very complicated, expensive,
and daunting experience. There are three certificates involved. These are
Private Pilots License, Instrument Rating, and Commercial Pilots License.
Training can be completed under either FAA Part 141 or Part 61 guidelines.
Each part has there advantages and disadvantages.
The San Diego Flight Training Commercial Pilot Program that I have
structured comprises both Part 141 and Part 61 training curriculum. Private
Pilots License and Instrument Rating are completed under Part 141 in order
to keep student pilot on structured and methodical training path.
Commercial Pilots License is completed under Part 61 in order to minimize
ground training expense.
Minimum flight hours required for CPL Part 141 is 190 hours total and CPL
part 61 is 250 hours. It is rare to see a student pilot finishing CPL Part
141 in 190 hours. Most will take 225 hours or more. Be wary of flight
schools that quote low priced CPL programs based on minimum FAA 141 ground
and flight training hour requirements.
Ground and San Diego Flight Training required to complete Licenses /Ratings
will vary by student. It is extremely rare to see students complete courses
under Part 141 minimum ground and flight hour requirements. Students who
exceed 141 minimums are often unpleasantly surprised by the additional
ground and flight hours necessary for them to finish. AFTS pilot packages
are based on average student pilot hours required to complete courses. This
avoids false advertising and unpleasant financial surprises.
The goal of American Flight Training Source is to provide each pilot
candidate with proper guidance in selecting the best school and the right
program tailored for their specific needs as a commercial pilot.
